Upwas

Upwas. Dieting has become a part and parcel of our daily lives. People from olden ages have been following upwas on certain days of the month and year like Chaturthi, Ekadashi, Poornima, Mahashivratri, etc. It was their way to take care of their health. Nowadays, dieting or upwas is one of the tried and tested fads for faster fat loss and weight management.  When the upwas is for special days like Mahashivratri or Ashadhi Ekadashi, children at home desperately look forward to devouring the traditional recipes like upwas delicacies like Sabudana wadas, Bhagar (warai tandul), potato sabzi, etc. However, the delicacies served during fasts are increasing phenomenally.
People are ready to experiment with food and flavours. Dishes like upwas idli, upwas dosa, upwas sheera are products of simple variations in mixing and cooking upwas flours like amaranth, buckwheat and chestnut. Items earlier belonging to hotels are being cooked at home, like the sweets made from potatoes and sweet potatoes, sweet kachoris, etc.  Not only are these dishes simple and healthy (most of them) they also bring novelty to lunches and dinners. Thanks to the ready availability of flours, mixes and easy accessibility to recipes, these recipes are much sought! Nevertheless, an upcoming Upwas at home adds a variety to the monotonicity in food items.
One of such upwas is of Mahashivratri. Mahashivratri falls on the 13th or 14th day of Phalgun month in the Hindu Calendar. Phalgun is the last month of the year. People believe that Lord Shiva got married to Goddess Parvati on this day. It is on this day when Lord performs his Tandav dance. People across India observe upwas on MahashivRatri. They follow different rituals like performing Abhishek (continuous showering of milk on Shiva Linga), offering flowers, chanting Lord’s names, visiting a temple, offering bilva patra, etc. Belief says that if we meditate and follow certain norms on this particular day, we become free from the vicious life and death cycle. Such is the greatness of this day!
